Tyler Perry’s The Gospel of Christmas Nov. 11th on Netflix

Tyler Perry is giving us a Christmas movie with a choir stand full of legends. Netflix announced that Tyler Perry’s The Gospel of Christmas premieres November 11, and the cast reads like a Stellar Awards lineup. Perry wrote and directed the film, and he produced it with Angi Bones and Tony L. Strickland.

R&B singer Tank stars as Isaac, a struggling pastor who inherits his family’s church and moves his family to a rough New York City neighborhood to rebuild it. He is fighting doubt and temptation, and on top of that a sinister adversary is working against him. To save the church and the people who depend on it, Isaac has to rediscover his faith and the power of prayer.

Now let’s talk about this cast. Fantasia plays Rebecca, while Fred Hammond and Ann Nesby play Abraham and Sarah, which is about as Bible as character names get. Pastor Shirley Caesar is May, and Hezekiah Walker plays Matthew. Yolanda Adams shows up as Gloria and Chanté Moore plays Juanita Sherman, while Vanessa Bell Armstrong is right there in the choir where she belongs. All four Clark Sisters appear too, with Jacky Clark Chisholm as Bella and her sisters playing aunts. And yes, CeCe Winans is in it as Mrs. Johnson. You know I was happy to see a Winans on that list.

Perry said the movie started with the music. “The vision for The Gospel of Christmas started with me listening to the songs that inspired me,” he told Netflix. “If you know gospel, you know these people, and if you don’t know gospel, just wait until you see this movie.” Kirk Franklin produced the soundtrack, which blends classic and contemporary gospel with holiday favorites and even a little rap.

I have been waiting for something like this. Gospel music has carried so many of us through hard seasons, and it is rare to see this many of the voices we grew up on in one film made for a worldwide audience. The story hits close to home too. Plenty of pastors are carrying churches in neighborhoods the world has given up on, and they don’t always get to say out loud when they are tired or questioning. Christmas is about God coming close to people right where they are, rough neighborhoods included.

The Gospel of Christmas runs an hour and 32 minutes and starts streaming November 11 on Netflix. Mark your calendar and grab a seat on the couch.
