The Gospel of Christmas Trailer Is Here, and It Preaches
Netflix just dropped Tyler Perry’s The Gospel of Christmas trailer. The film premieres November 11, and judging from this first look, it is going to be a lot more than a cozy holiday movie.
R&B singer Tank plays Isaac, a pastor who inherits his family’s church in a struggling New York neighborhood, and Fantasia plays his wife, Rebecca. The trailer does not shy away from his pain. The church is facing foreclosure and his father has passed. On top of that, he and Rebecca are worried about their young son. In one of the hardest moments, Isaac says, “I prayed for our son to speak. And I also prayed for my father to live. See how my prayers are working out?”
That line stopped me, because so many of us have prayed a prayer that seemed to go unanswered. Rebecca keeps pointing him back to God even when he cannot see the way. “You’re slipping back into the man you used to be before I met you,” she tells him, and later, through tears, “I love you and I don’t want to lose you.” Fantasia brings the kind of raw honesty to that scene that only comes from somebody who has walked through her own valleys.
And of course, there is music. Kirk Franklin produced the soundtrack, and the trailer is full of joyful worship. Fans will get to see a long list of gospel greats on screen, including CeCe Winans, Yolanda Adams, Fred Hammond, Pastor Shirley Caesar and The Clark Sisters. If you know gospel, you already know this cast is something special.

Tank summed up the heart of the film in an interview with PEOPLE. “We always center Christmas around gifts, but we often forget about the gift,” he said. That is the word right there. This season is about Jesus, the gift God gave when we did not even know how badly we needed Him, and it looks like this movie wants to remind us of that.
